Difference between Keyword Density and Keyword Proximity

Keyword Density and Keyword Proximity

Keywords are the key factors while we write or generate content for our website or blogs. There are few good methods of using keywords such as Long Tail Keywords, Latent semantic indexing Keywords (LSI Keywords), Keyword Density and Keyword proximity. But most of the time it’s confusing to spot difference between keyword density and keyword proximity. Today I am going to share some good information which will help you to understand the basic difference between keyword density and keyword proximity.

What is Keyword Density?

Keyword density is the count of keywords used in content. This is the ratio or percentage of keywords contained within the total number of indexable words in a web page content. The preferred keyword density ratio varies from search engine to search engine. In general, the best practice of keyword density is from 1.5% to 4% within every thousand words.  For example if you are writing content for 1000 words then you can use your keyword for 40 times within the content. But it is always good to maintain the flesch reading score. This is a readability test which is designed to indicate how difficult a passage in English is to understand.

What is Keyword Proximity?

Keywords Proximity is the term for keyword closeness. It means the distance between two keywords in a long tail keyword which is originated from a short keyword. For example, if there is a keyword “SEO consultant India” then its long tail variation could be “Who is the best SEO Consultant in India“. Here, the long tail keyword has all the three essential keywords “Best”, “SEO Consultant”, and “India”. Now the proximity between “Best” and “SEO Consultant” is 1 word. And keyword proximity between “SEO Consultant” and “India” is again 1 word. But as you can see, the keyword proximity between “Best” and “India” it is 3 words. Keyword Proximity is one of the important factors of LSI (Latent semantic Index) because it creates variations that search engine expects your content to have while it has the main focus keyword like “SEO Consultant India”.

Importance of Keyword Density and Proximity for better SEO

While writing the content, you need to focus on EEAT Guidelines by google. You need to maintain the quality of content. If you stuff unnecessary keywords it will increase the keyword density in written content. In or to maintain the proximity, you have to write large piece of content which will not make sense.

If you maintain the correct keyword density and proximity, you will be able to focus on quality of content and follow all the content guidelines by search engines.

Quality content will rank better and give you better results in SEO. Instead of investing your time in stuffing keywords in content, use the intent and use keywords wisely in content piece.

Hope this would help you to understand the difference between keyword density and keyword proximity. Please comment below if you have any suggestions to improve the information.

  8. Hey there,

Would you mind stating which blog platform you’re using? I’m going to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a hard time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique.

P.S Apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!

    1. Hi Blake,
I am always ready to answer such questions. I would suggest you to focus on your blogging skills instead of choosing a platform. It is the least priority for a blogger. It really doesn’t matter which platform you use but it really matters how you can rank in SERP.
