Google Analytics Sessions
A session is a period of time during which a user interacts with your website or app. When user land on your website from SERP they spent some time on your website or app. Depending on page content they spent time while exploring or scrolling. Sessions initiates as soon as user opens your website or app and start engaging. Sometimes the sessions starts from page or screen where user’s previous session was timed out.
Session Duration
It is common between users that they don’t close the tab and start a new search. In this situation previous session gets expire and it restarts when user come back and start scrolling or clicking again.
By default, a session ends or times out after 30 minutes of user inactivity. There is no limit to how long a session can last.
What is Session ID
Session ID is also known as ga_session_id in GA4 (Google analytics four). Analytics session id is unique identifier assigned to each and every session. You can also call it a timestamp which indicated when users started interaction on your website or app. Google Analytics collects timestamp with every event as session ID under event requests.
How GA4 calculates number of sessions
Counting number of sessions is easy in GA4. Google analytics calculates number of unique session IDs occur on website or application and store under them sessions.
How to view session metrics in GA4
In order to check all the sessions, you can follow given below steps.
- login to google analytics
- Choose the property
- Set the date range
- Go to Acquisition
- Select Traffic Acquisition
